Violent riots in Paris, town hall burned as 550k protest across France

Clashes between protesters and riot police at Place de la République in Paris dragged on for over seven hours, leaving the square wrapped in thick tear gas and with around 160 people detained, Al Mayadeen’s correspondent in the French capital reported on Saturday afternoon.

Hawzah News Agency- Sit-ins and marches were held near the presidential palace, as well as in other parts of Paris and across the country.

A minister said more than 550,000 people joined the protests against shrinking purchasing power across France, including 110,000 in the capital. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez told reporters that police arrested around 400 people nationwide, most of them adults.

In the central city of Limoges, a fire tore through the 143-year-old town hall on Saturday evening after a group stormed the building amid the unrest, authorities said.

The latest protests come as students push to broaden the movement, while the government insists it is running out of steam. Some participants believe Tuesday’s demonstrations may prove a turning point.

The movement began in mid-September at a secondary school in Créteil, on the outskirts of Paris, before spreading to other parts of France. Protesters are denouncing teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, crumbling school buildings and long school days, and are calling for better learning conditions and adequate resources.
